Bout 4: War of the Wheels Recap
Last Saturday the 15th October the 4th Bout of the WIRD home season took place: War of the Wheels. The masses flocked to Berkeley to cheer for the fearsome Vixens and the formidable Vipers. Despite the fact that the season had already been won by the Vixens, the competition was no less fierce. The added feature of skaters from Central Coast and Sydney leagues made for an interesting game. Due to injury the Vixens welcomed SRDL skaters Fiesty Cuffs, Liv Vicious, Stockard Slamming, Bacardi Bruiser and Deby Does Damage into their ranks. Meanwhile the Vipers replenished their numbers with Xanadon’t, Tomahawk Geronimo, Thunderslut and Womb Raider. This bout was easily the closet of the season, with the crowd on the edge of their seats the entire time. The game was one of big hits, superior teamwork and lightening quick jamming. It wasn’t until the final 10 minutes that the Vipers were able to race away and snatch their first victory of the season. Final Score: 135-96. Vixen iKandy and Viper Chakram were awarded game MVPs. Big Thanks to the skaters from SRDL and CCRG for skating with us!

WIRD Supporter: Natalie Parkes, Graphic Designer
Bon vivant, social butterfly and all round party girl…. three phrases that suite Natalie Parkes perfectly. Nat has been responsible for the last WIRD bout poster and is currently working on her second, managing to cram considerable graphic design skill into her busy schedule. Nat is an avid derby fan, finding herself in the crowd at many derby bouts… only time will tell if she will pull on some skates and heed the derby call. We got in contact with Nat and asked her to answer some vital questions for WIRDNEWSBLOG.
Best thing about being involved with WIRD.The people – everyone is super nice and supportive and willing to give people a go (especially novice graphic designers)

Two Weeks til EERD! Smackdown Sally Recaps EERD2!
Wollongong Illawarra Roller Derby loves it’s fans. They’re devoted, loyal and make one hellava racket. WIRDNEWSBLOG is proud to introduce Smackdown Sally, an anonymous but devoted WIRD supporter and avid amateur derby reporter. While not the loudest voice in the crowd, Sally offers a trackside view of the last WIRD EERD game. Newcastle won by a mere 12 points making this game one of the most evenly matched contests of the ERRD tournament so far. Check out Sally’s recap of EERD2 (16th June) in preparation for the rematch on October 1. Will the WIRDos triumph? Or will they be overcome by the Dockyard Dames (not bloody likely! :)?

The best damn bout I have seen in ages!
It had everything you want to see as a spectator; good hits, skilful jamming, tactical blocking, opposition whinging (lots of it) and dubious refereeing decisions.
WIRDOs you were amazing from top to bottom the team play was outstanding and with such a close result, well done!!!
The hits were bone crunching and I thought Janis Job’em and AVO had knocked Newcastle back up the highway and into another time zone with the way they were rocking the purple and yellows.
Sredy and Manic Bullet the jamming maniacs provided a slamming start and kept the points ticking over until the very end. It looked as though you were going to steal a solid victory until a controversial decision to put Manic in the penalty box with 4 mins to go all but sealed Newcastle’s win.
Vishious Ness and Courtney Lovebite combined beautifully to wall out the opposition jammers and keep the pack contained.
It was great to see combinations of new and veteran skaters working so effectively. The bench management was outstanding with solid combinations being utilised for the whole bout.
Although it was a closed bout everyone there was rapt with the spectacle and the athleticism displayed by the Steel City Roller Dolls.
Final Score Newcastle 115 – 103 WIRD.
I can’t wait for the next Vipers vs Vixens to get my next Wollongong Derby fix.
Oh and by the way, Go Vipers!!!!
Luv Yas…
